The Benefits of Food in Training Programs - Make Learning Sweet!

Some of you may think that the sense of taste are not really addressed in training. However, if you really want to create a positive learning environment, food may play an important role. There are a number of reasons, I only list the top four come to mind. First, the way most people eat. Second is a traditional food resources of the social bond. Reports Third: Many people associate food with love and nurturing. Fourth, the chocolate can stimulatethe same feel-good endorphins that make people feel loved.

Those who provide training in the private sector may typically offer continental breakfasts or at least coffee and rolls in the morning, and cookies and soda in the afternoon. Your participants may even expect this and complain loudly if it is lacking, especially caffeinated beverages in the morning!

The experience of those who train in the public sector is dramatically different, because there is typically no provision for such gustatory amenities! That is why I bring candy of all kinds, including nut-free and sugar-free candy, to all of my workshops. It is an unexpected treat for the participants that creates a very positive and relaxed mood- especially if you have a variety that respects different tastes and dietary restrictions.

Sometimes, I will tell the story behind the candy. There is a tradition that when a Jewish child first begins to study the Torah, which is an important religious book, the child is asked to touch the Torah and then dip a finger into honey, to learn that learning is sweet. Now you know the origin of my sign off line! It seems an appropriate welcome to the participants and a way to reinforce their taking the time to invest in themselves and their learning.

Over the years, I have noticed different regional, generational, and personal preferences for candy. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, there was a run on the watermelon Jolly Rancher hard candies! In Wausau, Wisconsin, people couldn't get enough of the caramels! In some locations, no one wants the dark chocolate Hershey squares, while in others, that's what the discriminating candy lover's desire. Baby Boomers really get a kick out of "old fashioned" candy mixes that include Bit of Honey and other candies they fondly remember from their childhoods.

However, in ALL locations, you can't go wrong with Hershey chocolate nuggets, both with and without nuts! I should have taken out stock in Sam's Clubs years ago, because of all the bulk candy I purchase there! Just remember to select individually wrapped candies and bring your own plastic stacking candy bowls!

Of course, there are considerations regarding the transport of candy- especially in warm months or warm climates. I made the mistake of bringing chocolates to Alabama in the summer and leaving them in the car for fifteen minutes. I came back to chocolate soup! Even in Wisconsin I have learned that I need a cooler to keep the candy intact during the summer (especially the sugar-free hard candies, which actually melt faster than chocolate candies).

In the winter in Wisconsin, I can keep the candy in my car or in my garage. The only caveat is that I have to warn participants not to bite into them immediately, because they may lose a tooth in the frozen candy!

So, bowls of candy on the tables, and caffeinated beverages and food in an easily accessible location, can create a welcoming environment. Cold water at each table is also a kindness, particularly if it is replenished after each break. Your participants are your GUESTS, and providing these food treats is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to establish a warm and relaxed learning environment.

If you keep the candy bowls filled and pay attention to the candy wrappers (so you can see what the individual preferences are!), you can also reinforce a caring relationship with individual participants! But don't move too quickly to refill those bowls, because participants will network when they go to candy-pick from other table's candy bowls! You will also notice participants bonding by seeking out favorite candies for each other.

Food can be used as a positive reinforcement or reward during a training session. I like to hand out Tootsie Roll Pops to reward participants who "Pop UP" during kinesthetic comprehension checking exercises. Cracker Jacks provide a happy surprise reward, and if you would like to motivate real competition between participants, just offer small bags of peanut M&M's as the winning prize! A word of warning: to avoid creating conflict, it is wise to ultimately give everyone a treat!

If two participants or table groups are feuding or simply disagreeing with each other, one way to lighten the mood is to ask that each offer the other some candy!

I also use food as a rite of passage. In Madison, Wisconsin (my home base), the participants in any of my training that lasts for three or more days get a choice of the type of Kringle (a wonderful Wisconsin coffee-cake-like treat!) they want for the last day. They can select from a huge assortment of fruit and/or nut and/or cheese Kringle, and I always bring at least two to be sure to meet everyone's needs. This also requires remembering to bring a knife to cut the Kringle, plus napkins. In Kringle-less locations, donuts are an easy replacement.

A discussion regarding food in training programs would not be complete without mentioning lunch. Particularly if the lunch is provided as a part of the training program, you want to encourage the planners to avoid heavy meals and turkey on the menus! Both will put your participants (and possibly you!) to sleep afterwards. After lunch, your participants will appreciate finding mints in the candy bowl.

A positive gustatory experience can generate open, relaxed, and receptive learning engagement.

But the fastest healthy pancakes - only five minutes, start to eat

As much time as I spend writing and blogging, it is always nice to find out someone actually read something I wrote. Even if they send negative comments. The negative comments at least means they are interested, and cared enough to complain. The worst thing for a writer or a business to hear is nothing. How do you improve upon nothing?

Some time ago I posted a recipe for pancakes that I called "Settlers Pancakes" because the recipe was all stone ground whole grains. At first most people find them heavy and once they get used to them, there is no going back to a fluffy white sugar cake for breakfast. Someone with the initials J.M. sent me a comment on one of the sites that simply said "Who are you kidding? Who has that kind of time?".

One aspect of a successful life is the ability to control your time, therefore if this kind of thing (eating healthier) is important, then the time will be there. Since most people aren't there yet, I started digging for J.M. to find a faster way. I can now say I found it.

Coach's Oats is a prepackaged pancake mix that takes under 5 minutes to have ready. I have timed myself several times and my worst is 10 minutes. Coach's Oats are all natural and made with whole grains. According to the label, one serving has 24% of your daily fiber and only 14% of your daily carbs (before syrup and fruit that is). For a grain based product those are some good numbers.

The quick method is easy, if you have a griddle, start it to get it warming.

Add mix water and egg, stir then let sit for 2-3 minutes while you get the plates, forks butter and syrup out. If you are using a pan, now is the time to get it warming too.

A quick shot of olive oil cooking spray and you are ready to cook. After about a minute and a half the bubbles will start staying open at the top and you can flip them over. Another minute and half later, they are ready to eat.

You may have to adjust the recipe quantity, since the batter doesn't sit well in the fridge overnight. It gets pretty thick making day two a little tougher. I use half the recommended amount for my wife and I, then only use the egg white instead of the whole egg.

I like to add small organic blueberries and crushed frozen raspberries to mine. For my wife and nephew I also drizzle a line of Hershey's syrup to add some chocolate flavor. That is why my worst time is 10 minutes, I spend too much time making the drizzle art before I flip the Sweet and clean up a mess. Chocolate makes the kitchen smell good.

According to the label, Coach Oats was developed by Lynn Rogers, a former gymnastics coach at CSU Fullerton women. A true coach is really a dish, now that's cool.

Lunch Box Ideas

Kids lunch times at school are short and they spend half of the time talking and fooling around, so what do parents do to make sure they eat? The answer is make it fun and interesting!! First of all, kids like packaging...so, the better (and cooler) you make something look, the more apt the are to eat it. You don't need to make it extra special every day, but maybe you can use some of these ideas once or twice a week.

*Write a note, or make a heart on your child's sandwich with food coloring *Wrap sandwiches in colored cellophane wrap Cut sandwiches into fun shapes or letters *Wrap ribbon around carrot sticks or celery sticks and place in a plastic baggie *Put a note in that says "I love you" or "I am thinking about you" *Put a little prize in once in a while like a sticker or a pin or a plastic ring *Use banana bread to make a PB&J sandwich *Always put a napkin in, and sometimes draw a little smiley face or write a note on it *Include a fun straw *Put in a new fun pencil *Put a lipstick kiss on their napkin *Put a in Hershey's Kiss with a note attached "Here's a Kiss for you" *Put a in Hershey's Hug with a note attached "Here's a Hug for you" *Put soup in a thermos and be sure to include a colored plastic spoon *Give them chocolate milk in their thermos instead of regular *Put a flower in *Make a fruit kabob *Remove crust and cut sandwiches into triangles *Include homemade cookies *Give a special piece of candy once in a while *Put in fresh fruit or vegetables cut up *Tie ribbon around utensils *Cut sandwiches into strips *Roll up lunch meat and cheese and secure with a fun toothpick

Now - Here are some other ideas and recipes that will be sure to make your child's lunches memorable and fun. Go to http://www.TheIdeaBox.com for a complete list!

Butterfly Sandwich

Need:

bread

peanut butter

raisins

favorite jelly or jam

Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Cut into four triangles and arrange in butterfly shape. Use raisins to create an antennae. Easy and fun!

Daisy Apple

Need:

2 Tbs. raisins

2 Tbs. crunchy or creamy peanut butter

1 Mcintosh apple

Peanuts for garnish (omit if making for small child)

Set aside a few raisins for face. Stir remaining raisins into peanut butter. With apple corer or paring knife, remove core and seeds from apple. Using a small knife or spoon, push peanut butter mixture into center of apple. Make a happy face on top of peanut butter using reserved raisins. Optional: Arrange peanut halves around edge of peanut butter forming a circle.
Chill before serving.

Surprise Banana

Need:
Banana

Every once in a while I write with the tip of a knife(adults only) a note to my girls on the banana that is in their lunch. It doesn't show up right away but by the time they eat it at recess or lunch my "I love you" or "knock knock" joke is very dark. They love it!

The Benefits of Food in Training Programs - Make Learning Sweet!

Some of you may be thinking that the sense of taste really does NOT have to be addressed in a training program. However, if you really want to create a positive learning environment, food can play a huge role. There are a number of reasons for this, so I'll just list the first four that come to mind. First, most people like to eat. Second, food is a traditional means of social bonding. Third, many people associate food with love or nurturing relationships. Fourth, chocolate can stimulate the same feel-good endorphins that make people feel loved.

Those who provide training in the private sector may typically offer continental breakfasts or at least coffee and rolls in the morning, and cookies and soda in the afternoon. Five-Minute Oyster Stew

Five-Minute Oyster Stew

We went "yard selling" twice this last weekend. On Friday we went to Twin Falls and on Saturday, we went to the yard sales in our little berg, The Trout Capital of the Universe.

Trout farms here turn out trout like Hershey® turns out Hershey Kisses®.

We partake of some of that trout each year at the Annual Fish Fry put on by a local Boy Scout troop. My wife and I collect the tickets and money at the door from others that have decided that fried trout is better than cooking dinner. The scouts serve us trout while we are giving them a hand with the affair.

This year, I tried to get some folks to buy a flagpole so I could give those profits to the scouts too, but nobody was thinking about flagpoles, they came for trout.

One thing I miss in Idaho is seafood. The closest you can come to seafood is at the Sizzler® in Twin Falls. They have salmon and you can buy little skewers of shrimp to go with it. Somehow that is not the same as a good seafood restaurant in Cape May, New Jersey or Philadelphia. We don't even have a Red Lobster®.

You also can buy fresh crab meat at the local grocer on rare occasions. When it is available, I grab a few packages and toss them in my freezer for later use. I'm addicted to crabmeat omelettes.

On Saturday, I was chatting with a lady at her yard sale when she said, "It's Saturday so everything is half-off. I had looked at a bottle of spice and put it back down because it cost a buck which is against my yard-sale religion's price-for-spices.

When she said that it was half-off I grabbed the bottle and gave her the four-bits.

The spice is Beau Monde Seasoning from Spice Island®. On the label it says that you can add it to dishes like oyster stew to increase flavor instead of adding salt. I read the label and it is salt with sugar added as dextrose, onion, and celery seed, and tricalcium phosphate.

As that may be, the words oyster stew put me in a trance.

My wife, who always knows what I'm thinking, said, "You might be able to get some oysters at the local market."

I rushed right over there, not expecting to find fresh oysters or anything that resembled fresh oysters, but there might be a substitute.

Our little grocery store had only canned oysters. The cans were identical in size, about half the size of a can of corn, and the store brand was 10 cents cheaper than the other two brands. Reading the labels I decided they probably all came from the same factory in Korea. I bought the red can because I thought it was pretty. Also, the oysters were already boiled.

That is called scientific analysis.

The oysters were sort off slimy looking, some had a greenish color, but they were oysters all right.

They were not like the pretty oysters that come in jars that you can buy in Twin Falls at a large market.

Anyway, here is my recipe for Oyster Stew.

Five-Minute Oyster Stew

Ingredients

1 can of chicken broth

1 can of creamed soup (I wanted to use cream of mushroom but when I got home from the store I found that we were fresh out. I used creamed broccoli soup with cheese. I thought that would be too strong a taste for the oysters but I was wrong. Don't add a can of water or milk with the soup.)

1 can of boiled oysters. If you buy fresh or other uncooked oysters I suggest you fry them with a little butter and a clove of garlic first. It will only take a minute or so. (Don't buy canned oysters if you can get the real thing. Canned oysters taste good but they are a bit too slimy for me, at least the ones I bought.)

1 can of mushrooms (fresh mushrooms are always better but they take more work)

1 can of sliced potatoes

1 can of sliced carrots to give the stew a pretty color

Beau Monde seasoning; or salt, sugar, onion, and celery seed (forget the tricalcium phosphate)

Procedure

Dewater all cans except the soup and chicken broth, of course.

Chuck everything in a pot and bring to a boil. (Sure you can throw in a clove of garlic if you like.)

Serve

I found that there was no need to age this oyster stew. The flavor was there from the start.

My wife does not appreciate oyster stew or anything else that tastes

I ate the whole thing in two sittings.

Hey, it's good!

But the fastest Pancakes healthy - only five minutes, start to eat

How much time I spend writing and blogs, it's always nice to see someone read what I wrote. Although post negative comments. The negative comments at least means that they are interested and care enough to complain. The worst feeling for a writer or a company is nothing. How can you improve something?

Some time ago I have a recipe for pancakes, which I called "The Settlers Pancakes", because the recipe was all booked from wheat stone ground. At first, mostpeople find them heavy and once they get used to them, there is no going back to a fluffy white sugar cake for breakfast.

You may have to adjust the recipe quantity, since the batter not good night to sit in the refrigerator. And 'thick enough two days ago a bit' more difficult. I use half the recommended amount for my wife and I, then only the protein, rather than the whole egg.

I like to add small organic blueberries and chopped frozen raspberries to me. For my wife and granddaughter I wire a line of Hershey's chocolate syrup to add flavor, too. Why is my worst time of 10 minutes, I spend a lot of time, art drizzle, before the flapcakes and have a mess to clean up. The chocolate does make the kitchen smell good.

The benefits of food in training - making learning Sweet!

Fourth, chocolate can stimulate well do the same endorphins, making people feel loved.

Those who can participate in training in the private sector, continental breakfast in general, or at least coffee and sandwiches in the morning and cookies and soda offered in the afternoon. Participants can also expect that these and complain loudly, if not present, especially caffeinated drinks in the morning!

The experience of those in public sector train dramatically different, because usually there is nosuch gustatory amenities!

There is a tradition that when a Jewish child first begins to study the Torah, which is an important religious book, the child are asked to touch the Torah and then dip a finger in honey, to learn that learning is sweet. Now you know the origin cancel my line! It 'a proper greeting of the participants and an opportunity to strengthen its seems to take the time to invest in themselves and their education.

Over the years I have noticed a number of regional generation and personal preferences for sweets. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was a watermelon Jolly Rancher candy on the race! In Wausau, Wisconsinpeople couldn't get enough of the caramels!

Even in Wisconsin I have learned that I need a to keep intact candy cool during the summer months (particularly sweets, which actually melt faster than chocolate).

In winter in Wisconsin, I can keep the candy in my car or in my garage. The only restriction is that I have to warn participants not to bite because they can quickly lose a tooth in frozen candy!

So, bowls of sweets on the tables, and drinks containing caffeine and food in a convenient place to create, a warmenvironment.

But don't move to quickly fill the bowls, because if the network participants receiving other dishes Candy-table to go! You will also find participants through bonding find favorite candy for each other.

Food can be as positive reinforcement or reward used during training. I like the hand Tootsie Roll Pops participants, the "Pop Up reward" during kinesthetic awareness exercises control. Cracker Jack to reward a pleasant surprise, and if you wanthow to motivate a real competition between the participants, they also offer small bags of peanut M & M's as the prize! A word of warning: To avoid creating conflict, you should give everyone a gift at the end!

If two participants, or groups are fighting for table or simply disagrees with the other, a way to lighten the mood is to ask that the offer of desserts a few others!

I also use food as a rite of passage. In Madison, Wisconsin (my home base), participants in one of mytraining that lasts for three or more days get a choice of the type of Kringle (a wonderful Wisconsin coffee-cake-like treat!) they want for the last day.

Fresh Strawberry Pie with Chocolate Drizzle

Have you ever eaten strawberries dipped in chocolate? If so, you know how delicious they are, so delicious you can hardly stop eating them. The slightly tart flavor of the strawberries offsets the sweetness of the chocolate. Fresh Strawberry Pie with Chocolate Drizzle is based on this flavor combination. The recipe has been around for years and I have lightened it.

Pastry crust is high in fat so I used a chocolate crumb crust. I replaced the sugar with a Splenda-sugar blend. Instead of whipped cream I used "free" whipped topping. You must use really fresh strawberries for this pie, not bruised ones, so look them over carefully. Rinse the strawberries and dry them with a paper towel before you hull them. Chill the pie for two hours before slicing. Fresh Strawberry Pie with Chocolate Drizzle will be gone in the blink of an eye.

FRESH STRAWBERRY PIE WITH CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE

2 cups whole strawberries

1 cup mashed strawberries

1 chocolate Ready Crust, made with Hershey's chocolate

1 cup Splenda Sugar Blend for Baking

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

4 tablespoons corn starch

1 8-ounce carton "free" whipped topping

Hershey's light chocolate syrup

Rinse, dry, and hull the strawberries. Arrange two cups of whole strawberries, pointed ends up, in the chocolate crust.

Combine 1 cup mashed strawberries, the Splenda Sugar Blend for Baking, water, lemon juice, and corn starch in a medium saucepan. Cook, stirring often, until glaze has thickened. Cool glaze for two minutes and pour over whole strawberries. Chill the pie until the glaze has set. Frost pie with whipped topping. Drizzle chocolate syrup in zig-zag lines over frosting. Makes 8 yummy servings.

Have you ever eaten strawberries dipped in chocolate? If so, you know how it can be delicious, so delicious you can hardly stop eating. Chill the cake for two hours before slicing. Fresh strawberry cake with chocolate rain will be gone in no time.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe

I have always loved the combination of chocolate and peanut butter. I used to love the commercials of the kids running into each other, one child with the Hershey chocolate bar, and the other child with a jar of peanut butter.

The first time I tried these cookies, I was hooked. The recipe is a very simple peanut butter dough, with a Hershey's kiss in the middle:

1 cup butter

2/3 cup creamy peanut butter

1 cup white sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 2/3 cups flour

2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

Additional sugar in a bowl for rolling

Chocolate Kisses

Combine butter, peanut butter and sugars; blend until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla; blend. Mix flour, salt and soda, add to cream mixture; stir well. Roll dough into quarter size balls. Roll ball in bowl of sugar. Bake dough at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Immediately place chocolate kiss in center of each cookie. Bake an additional 2 minutes. Transfer to cooling rack.

You can add food coloring to the dough to create any color you'd like. We have made these cookies in red, green and blue. You can also divide the batter and make multiple colors for one batch of cookies.

Experiment with the many flavors of Hershey's kisses. They make a kiss that has peanut butter right in the middle. These are a wonderful addition to the peanut butter cookie. Hershey's also makes kisses with nuts in the middle. This is a fun kiss to put in the middle of the cookies. If you make a red dough, try the chocolate kisses that are part white and part brown.

We have also added peanut M&M's in the middle, instead of Hershey's Kisses. Follow the same recipe adding the M&M's at the very end and baking 2 additional minutes.

If you find the cookies a little sweet for your taste, cut out some of the brown sugar. Try cutting the brown sugar down to 3/4 of a cup.

Bon Appetite!!

Cute Car Cupcakes

Like most little boys, my son loves cars. From his car bed, to the little cars I find in my purse on an occasion, nothing makes him happier than something with wheels. So for his 4th birthday, I decided he would love a car theme for a party at his preschool. However, I am short of time so I needed something quick and simple. Putting on my thinking cap at the grocery store, here's what I came up with.

Here's what you need:

Cake mix

Frosting

candy sprinkles (optional)

Mini Snickers

Hershey's Kissables (colored)

Here's what you do: Make cupcakes according to the directions on the box. Frost and sprinkle candy sprinkles on the cupcake. Take 1 mini snicker and push 4 colored Hershey's kissables into the body of the snicker to act as wheels. The point on the kissables will act similar to a thumb tact and the shell will be hard enough to push into the snicker. That's it!

I was so happy that these cupcakes, as simple as they were, turned out so cute. While I was making these cute creations, I thought of more ways to use these little cars.

Train - make several cars like above, and attach each car with a thin licorice lace. To make the engine, attach a rolo cut in 1/2 on top.

Bus - Use a regular sized snickers bar, attach several wheels under the candy bar similar to a bus. (4 on each end for a total of 8 wheels)

Semi truck - First, create the trailer from a regular sized snickers bar and make the truck out of a mini snickers. You could shape it to look like a truck by stacking a small piece on top of the small snickers so it is in the shape of an "L"Attach trailer to the truck with a small piece of thin licorice lace.

I'm so excited to bring these cupcakes to preschool tomorrow as I'm sure the kids will love them. Of course I know the first thing my son will eat are the wheels!

Now, back to earth, so to speak. Are you a roller coaster junkie or have a quick escape rollercoaster weekend, just thinkingfor a change of lifestyle. Try the revenge of the Mummy, Universal Studios Florida and the silver bullet to Knott's Berry Farm. Here are some more: Storm Runner, Hershey Park, Thunderhead, dollywood and Tsunami Clementon Amusement Park in Clementon, New Jersey.

How about some 'history? One of my favorite trips of five days, the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. State? Then try some of the most popular museums: Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, PABirmingham Museum of Art Center in Birmingham, AL, Buffalo Bill Historical, Cody, WY, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, NY, the Museum of Paleontology, University of California, Berkeley, CA

Here's a statistic, I bet you did not know. Of the 25 highest waterfalls in the world is the guest in the U.S. for three. If you love waterfalls, you can certainly plan a trip of five days for the opening of the eyes following the places noisy nature: Snow Creek (660 m, California), see Ribbon (491 mCalifornia) and Upper Yosemite (436 m, California.) It's amazing three of the highest water, California is in the world. Disappointed because you live far from California? Do not worry. Thirty U.S. states are waterfalls. Find someone in your area by U.S. cases of water in your favorite search engine.

We explored many adventures above ground, but what on earth? Do not forget the many large caves in the United States. The visit to the depths of a caveoffers an experience you can not find anywhere else on Earth. Here are the top five rated speed Cave USA: Ape Cave Vancover, WA, groans Cavern, Vallecito, CA, Carlsbad Caverns, Carlsbad, NM, Jewel Cave, near Rapid City, SD, and
Niagara Cave, Harmony, MN. Who knows? They could have just found an interesting new hobby.

U.S. tourists often plan trips outside the United States. I suggest that if you are short on time or have a limited budget, you or your family find manysomething less than a hundred miles to do by the front door. Virtually all of the above suggestions are here in the U.S.. This is a great place to live, and offers many short trips and quick escapes. Use one of the ideas presented here and be sure to recommend your friends and associates.

But before you go, consider these other fun and adventure packed five-day vacation ideas: learning to water ski or snow or, as they sail a boat. Go Fish ... Deep-seaFishing, fish salmon, trout, or learn to dive in five days. How about sky diving or para-sailing? Let your imagination run wild.

OK, so I gave mini tours of more than twenty large. The point is ... There is much to do and so little time to do so. Out of your environment and get your mind off work and other things ... It feels great after the return.

What I found five days on a short holiday or a weekend trip is that it seemswhich is the right amount to spend time away from home and is virtually guaranteed a big smile on his face for a long time to hold.
